Robert is a lifelong Hoosier, raised with our values of integrity, dedication, and responsibility.  Working life began for Robert with his first paycheck at age 8.  Delivering newspapers along with his family taught Robert about hard work and its rewards.  With this foundation, he has worked throughout all levels of industry.  Experienced in service, sales, construction, manufacturing, and management, Robert knows the working world.  Mr. Lonie said, “I will use my experience gained through the last 30 years to lead Michigan City as Mayor.”

Educated in business and economics, Robert excelled in the classroom. Robert is a member of both Phi Theta Kappa and Kappa Beta Delta honor societies. In 2012 Robert earned the Chancellor’s Scholarship at Ivy Tech in Michigan City. He continued his studies at Valparaiso University.

Robert Lonie has sought to be an active and contributing member of Michigan City since making his home here. As a participant in Michigan City Citizen’s Police Academy, he gained a better understanding of the duties and challenges faced by our local police. Robert was a part of Fire Ops 101 as a crash course into the experiences of the Michigan City Fire Department. Robert has participated in spring clean-up activities, walked in local parades, served as an election official, and served as Chairperson of the La Porte County Young Republicans.  Having run more than two dozen marathons and half-marathons, Robert has raised money and awareness for numerous charities.

The same determination Robert has shown in work, education, and citizenship will be used to lead Michigan City as its next Mayor.  Robert said, “I believe people, when given an opportunity, will succeed. Those of us who call Michigan City home deserve greater opportunities for success.”

Robert is running on a platform that includes government accessibility, a much more inclusive and diverse government, pedestrian and transit safety, economic redevelopment based on the city’s strengths, and a better quality of life for all citizens of Michigan City.  Robert said, “We deserve a Michigan City our children, parents, and grandparents will be proud of. We deserve a Michigan City with jobs and opportunities for everyone.”
